The Alliance for Development and Climate, which was launched in 2018 as a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the FAW/n, has now been transformed into a foundation. The foundation is based in Berlin and is headed by Peter Renner and Dr. Olivia Henke.
The establishment of the foundation aims to ensure the alliance’s long-term existence, expand its impact, and continue the successful work of the past two years. Details of these activities can be found in the 2019 Annual Report.
FAW/n will continue to actively support the work of the foundation.
This year’s Supporters’ Meeting of the Alliance took place digitally on November 23. In the morning, supporters and interested parties had the opportunity to follow expert presentations via livestream, including contributions from the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Müller, the foundation’s board members, Alliance Ambassador Nina Ruge, and Prof. Franz Josef Radermacher. The event continued with an interactive panel discussion, followed by various online workshops in the afternoon. The meeting was moderated by film producer, journalist, and TV presenter Andrea Thilo.
A greeting also came from the rough South Atlantic, where Boris Herrmann sent a message to the supporters of the Alliance. The sailor is participating in the renowned and challenging Vendée Globe solo around-the-world regatta under the motto “A Race We Must Win.” With the Alliance for Development and Climate logo on his sail, he seeks to inspire new thinking.
Recently, the Alliance also published a study on the voluntary carbon offset market in Germany. In addition to the rapidly increasing overall demand for CO₂ certificates, the study reveals a strong trend toward climate protection projects with development impacts and those based on “nature-based solutions.”

On November 13, 2020, the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Müller was nominated by the German Federal Cabinet as a candidate for the position of Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
UNIDO promotes industrial development as a means of combating poverty, fostering globalization, and ensuring environmental sustainability. It is an important partner for Germany in promoting global development and creating new jobs in developing countries.
According to the German government, there are “other strong candidates for the election in November 2021.” However, no other candidates have yet been officially announced. So far, the position of Director General has always been held by men from developing or emerging countries. If elected, Dr. Gerd Müller would be the first European to assume this role.
Dr. Müller is highly familiar with international development cooperation and economic development. Since 2013, he has served as Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. Through his participation in parliamentary assemblies of African, Caribbean, and Pacific states, he has gained significant international experience. During his eight years as Parliamentary State Secretary, he placed particular emphasis on global food security and international agricultural development projects.
Other major achievements of his tenure include the expansion of cooperation with Africa, the “One World – No Hunger” initiative, his commitment to international climate protection, and close collaboration with the private sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to supporting immediate health responses, he also worked to preserve jobs in developing countries, as poorer nations and their populations have been hit hardest by the crisis — for them, the pandemic could result in a lost decade.

From September 24–26, 2020, committed students and young professionals from various disciplines met in Kiel to learn how they can promote sustainable development and global climate protection. At the second “Ambassador Academy – Development, Climate and Population” the focus was on the topics of the Alliance for Development and Climate initiated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The Academy was organized and conducted by the Hermann Ehlers Foundation in cooperation with the Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing/n (FAW/n) in Ulm.
A total of 21 participants from all over Germany — ranging from students of various disciplines to young professionals — came together in Kiel, adhering strictly to COVID-19 safety regulations. Over the weekend, they discussed with leading experts the key interrelations, interactions, conflicts, and contradictions at the intersection of international climate protection and global sustainable development.
After months of preparation, the participants also took part in practical workshops on effective argumentation, public speaking, and debating to learn how to inspire companies, policymakers, and societal actors to take meaningful action.
The goal of the program is to train selected participants to become ambassadors for the multi-stakeholder initiative “Alliance for Development and Climate“.
Founded in 2018 at the initiative of Federal Development Minister Dr. Gerd Müller, the Alliance promotes non-governmental engagement in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. It focuses on climate protection projects in non-industrialized countries, which contribute both to improving the global climate balance and to local economic and social development. The Alliance’s supporters aim to achieve climate neutrality or even climate positivity in the long term. The trained ambassadors advocate for the Alliance’s goals through lectures, presentations, and discussions, and help raise awareness of its approach.
The weekend in Kiel formed the core of the Academy’s training program, which also included a preparatory phase with 12 online workshops and a follow-up phase consisting of three post-event meetings. Participants had been selected through a nationwide application process.
You can watch the 2020 Ambassador Academy Aftermovie on YouTube.
The evening event on September 24, 2020, featuring Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Franz Josef Radermacher, Prof. Dr. Estelle Herlyn, Prof. Dr. Martin Visbeck (GEOMAR Kiel), Michael Maass (Kühne + Nagel), and Christopher Politano (South Pole), is also available on YouTube.

The well-known political expert and futurologist Daniel Dettling spoke in an interview with Kurier about the future of efficiency- and price-driven capitalism. Like FAW/n, he believes that this form of market economy has become outdated due to its inefficiency and will be replaced by an eco-social market economy.
In the interview, conducted as part of this year’s Municipal Summer Talks in Bad Aussee, Dettling commented on the policies of individual countries as well as on Africa and the EU. In his view, Europe will grow closer together as a result of the coronavirus crisis and evolve into a “solidary federation of states”. The EU’s advantage, he says, is that it is “freer than China and more social than the USA”. European data and property protection could also become globally attractive in the future and serve as an incentive for major companies. Dettling identifies India and Africa as the rising powers of the future, emphasizing that Europe must strengthen its engagement in these regions.
When asked what lessons can be learned from the current economic crisis, Dettling replied: “The solution can only come from a combination of health and environmental protection that leads toward innovation and new technologies”. FAW/n has likewise made it its mission to link research into new technical options with biological solutions to help overcome the current global energy and climate crisis.

On August 27, 2020, marking the 250th birthday of philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the association “Global Energy Solutions e. V.” was officially founded at a ceremony in Ulm City Hall, initiated by the FAW/n.
The association will conduct analyses on current global energy, climate, and development issues, develop solutions in cooperation with industrial partners, and evaluate business cases. Its main focus areas include green hydrogen – together with the large quantities of renewable energy required – methanol, and its derivative products (e.g., synthetic fuels, Power-to-X). Another key area of work will be national and European regulatory frameworks related to these topics.
The association’s activities are carried out in partnership with the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and form part of the broader initiatives in Baden-Württemberg and the Ulm region related to hydrogen technologies:
“If the association succeeds in initiating the construction of such plants worldwide, it will create the jobs of the future,” said Norbert Barthle, Parliamentary State Secretary at the BMZ, who described green hydrogen as the “oil of the future”.
“A good day for Ulm, a good day for the region,” added Dr. Jan-Stefan Roell, President of the Ulm Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK Ulm), who marked the launch by donating €5,000 to the association.
Representing the State of Baden-Württemberg, Dr. Uwe Lahl, Ministerial Director at the Ministry of Transport, attended the event. Both he and Ulm’s Lord Mayor Gunter Czisch described the founding of Global Energy Solutions e. V. as an important milestone.
As with the Desertec initiative, the use of the world’s major sunbelt deserts plays a key role in the cost-effective production of vast quantities of renewable energy. This connects directly to the BMZ’s Marshall Plan with Africa, as the project also seeks to foster a future-oriented, partnership-based industrial and innovation policy between Europe and Africa. It also involves leveraging Africa’s potential in reforestation, humus formation, and rainforest protection – all part of “nature-based solutions”. These approaches remove CO₂ from the atmosphere (so-called negative emissions), making a significant contribution to climate protection while simultaneously supporting development aligned with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The unique features of the association include its emphasis on the key role of methanol, the concept of multiple CO₂ recycling and circular carbon use, its international scope, its strong development focus, and its commitment to climate neutrality – achieved through CO₂ compensation using nature-based solutions.
Christof von Branconi, former board member of Lurgi, was elected as Chairman of the six-member board. Prof. Dr. Franz Josef Radermacher, Director of the Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing (FAW/n) in Ulm, was appointed Deputy Chairman.

Prof. Radermacher contributed a foreword to the 2019 Sustainability Report magazine of the Nassauische Heimstätte corporate group. Under the motto “more drive to take action,” he highlighted the themes of housing and the Alliance for Development and Climate.
Housing is a fundamental human need. Nevertheless, we must not overlook the impact of the building sector on the climate. From inadequate insulation to cement production, global CO₂ emissions must be drastically reduced if we are to achieve the climate goals set in Paris.
According to Prof. Radermacher, the most effective solutions are global in nature. This is why the Nassauische Heimstätte | Wohnstadt corporate group is a member of the Alliance for Development and Climate. Through this membership, the company temporarily offsets its CO₂ emissions – for example, by investing in a project in Nicaragua. You can learn more about this initiative here.

“We appeal as human beings to human beings: Remember your humanity, and forget the rest”.
With these moving words, Albert Einstein – born in Ulm – Bertrand Russell, and nine other distinguished scientists and intellectuals addressed humanity on July 9, 1955. The famous resolution, later known as the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, has lost none of its relevance 65 years later: Weapons of mass destruction and warfare continue to threaten humankind. Yet the crises we face today have multiplied exponentially in number, intensity, complexity, and impact. Infectious diseases, hunger and poverty, inequality, the resurgence of nationalism, and – overshadowing all of these – the threat of climate change, define our time more than ever before.
The urgency with which the Manifesto appeals to human conscience and universal values resonates even more strongly today. The challenges may be greater than ever, but our collective knowledge and capacity for global action have also grown over the past 65 years. With the voice of science, the youth taking to the streets for their future, the global call for human rights, and our human creativity, we are now called upon more than ever to move forward with determination. This also means rethinking and replacing the habits, doctrines, and strategies that have brought us to this point – so that we may forge new paths.
Since 1955, the Russell-Einstein Manifesto has inspired many institutions to work for a better shared future. It also led directly to the founding of the Pugwash Movement, whose contribution to the 65th anniversary can be read here. We, too, from Einstein’s birthplace Ulm, wish to take this anniversary as an opportunity to recall and reaffirm this profoundly relevant appeal.
In an article for KLIMAzin by the climate-neutral Hessian state government, Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Franz Josef Radermacher introduces three members of the Alliance for Development and Climate and their exemplary concepts for achieving climate neutrality.
