Alliance for Development and Climate Opens a New Chapter

The Alliance for Development and Climate, which was launched in 2018 as a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), and the FAW/n, has now been transformed into a foundation. The foundation is based in Berlin and is headed by Peter Renner and Dr. Olivia Henke.

The establishment of the foundation aims to ensure the alliance’s long-term existence, expand its impact, and continue the successful work of the past two years. Details of these activities can be found in the 2019 Annual Report.

FAW/n will continue to actively support the work of the foundation.

This year’s Supporters’ Meeting of the Alliance took place digitally on November 23. In the morning, supporters and interested parties had the opportunity to follow expert presentations via livestream, including contributions from the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development Dr. Gerd Müller, the foundation’s board members, Alliance Ambassador Nina Ruge, and Prof. Franz Josef Radermacher. The event continued with an interactive panel discussion, followed by various online workshops in the afternoon. The meeting was moderated by film producer, journalist, and TV presenter Andrea Thilo.

A greeting also came from the rough South Atlantic, where Boris Herrmann sent a message to the supporters of the Alliance. The sailor is participating in the renowned and challenging Vendée Globe solo around-the-world regatta under the motto “A Race We Must Win.” With the Alliance for Development and Climate logo on his sail, he seeks to inspire new thinking.

Recently, the Alliance also published a study on the voluntary carbon offset market in Germany. In addition to the rapidly increasing overall demand for CO₂ certificates, the study reveals a strong trend toward climate protection projects with development impacts and those based on “nature-based solutions.”
